The History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in 1865. But wait…Lincoln issued The Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, and to take effect in 1863. So why did it take 2 years for slavery to end? It was because it took the Union Army that long to reach Galveston, Texas to announce that the slaves were free in Texas.

With that announcement, it was official that slavery ended in the United States. Check out this video and share the history of Juneteenth with your kids!

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the freedom of the slaves in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a combination of the words June and nineteenth. The day is also called Emancipation Day and Freedom Day.
